Rem‧brandt /ˈrembrænt/
(1606–69) a Dutch artist, Rembrandt van Rijn, who is regarded as one of the greatest European painters. He painted many portraits (=pictures of people and of himself), as well as many pictures of religious subjects. He is known especially for his use of light and shade.
