1. A place in which persons or things are lodged, located, or deposited, esp. a lodging-house, lodgings; a place of shelter or protection; Military quarters for soldiers. Now rare. L16.

2. Military. A temporary defensive work made on a captured part of an enemy's fortifications to make good a position and provide protection. L17.
