Nautical.
1. Any of various pieces of timber for supporting and strengthening, esp. as used to hold the frames of a wooden vessel in place until the outside planking is done. Also, the forward part of the wales which encompass the bow of a ship and are fastened to the stem. Freq. in pl. LME.

2. In pl. In full cat-harpings. Ropes or cramps used to brace in the shrouds of lower masts behind their yards. E17.
