(1904–61) a singer
comedian from the north of England who performed in the
music halls and appeared in films in the 1930s and 1940s. He usually appeared as a cheerful, rather stupid character with a big smile, and he is best known for singing humorous songs while playing the
UKELELE (=a musical instrument like a very small
guitar).
